Tuesday: 2012 Budget, Medicare, Patriot Act

Another jam-packed show today, including listener favorites Dr. Aaron Carroll and economist Dean Baker helping us evaluate budget priorities, plus two guests to discuss the Patriot Act.

Hour 1: Health policy expert Dr. Aaron Carroll came on to explain the wisdom of cutting Medicare, and discussing our health-related budget priorities, as well as the politics behind it all.

Pete made note of a couple of underreported stories, including the recent murder conviction of border activist Shawna Forde. (See previous blog entry.) As well, the recent admission by “Curveball” that he was lying.

Hour 2: Economist Dean Baker joined Pete to discuss budgets, entitlements, “job killers,” tax policy, and much, much more. I’m working to get the audio of Dean’s appearance online.

CATO Institute researcher Julian Sanchez explained what’s up with the Patriot Act, key provisions of which the House just voted to extend.

Hour 3: Rep. Dana Rohrabacher came on to talk about the Patriot Act and the 2012 budget. Rohrabacher told Pete that cutting $100 billion will have the net effect of creating jobs. Wow!

Cutting, spending, taxing — open phones on the US budget and its impact on jobs.

Pete wrapped up with some headlines, read some listener mail, and read your answers to the Question of the Day: What do you think of the push in Congress to stop funding local NPR and PBS stations? Sorry we didn’t get to more of them. View lots of answers on Facebook or check the #SUPD hashtag on Twitter.

The ‘Canadians Come Here’ Lie Persists

stephen-moore1On Friday’s Real Time with Bill Maher, a smirking Stephen Moore of the Wall Street Journal prepetuated a bold-faced lie that’s been proven false about how many Canadians come here for health care. Dr Aaron Caroll won “Chart of the Year” for his pie chart

Thursday: Healthcare Reform, Sudan, Afghanistan

headshot_aaron-carrollRight off the bat, Dr. Aaron Carroll joined us for a whole hour to talk about the House attempt to repeal Obama’s health insurance reform package. He took calls the whole time, mostly from listeners who believed the bill to be a “job killer” that needs repeal or alteration. Dr. Carroll even doled out some free advice to small business owners worried about the employer penalties built into the reform plan. Some employers might want to just pay the $2,000 penalty to not insure their already-uninsured workers, letting the government-subsidized exchanges fill the need.

We kicked off Hour Two with Pete reading your letters to him. We have plans to revive the listener mail bag on the site very soon.

We wrapped up the top of the hour with a passionate call-in segment on the controversial WSJ editorial,
